Ronaldo: I was warned I could end up in defence
Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken about his last meeting with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after he learned that a move to Real Madrid had been completed. The Portuguese star, who became the world’s most expensive player following his remarkable £80m transfer switch, also stressed his admiration for the Old Trafford crowd who he praised for helping him through the hard times. the FIFA World Player of the Year stated, revealed his former boss’ last words:
“He said ‘congratulations’. I think he knew it was the right time for me to move on and I think he acknowledged that I needed to go.
“He joked with me and told me that with all the offensive players at Real Madrid, I’d end up playing as a central defender.
“That was just his way of saying ‘good luck, son.’
“I did not get a chance to say goodbye to the fans but I hope they know that I enjoyed every moment playing at Old Trafford and would like to thank them for their support throughout the years. Even in the most difficult times I have always felt their support.”
